An experiential day that traces the stories of pioneering and inspiring women from the past and present who fought to realize their dreams for Israeli society and the state. During the tour, participants will delve into the reality of Jewish settlement in Eretz Israel during the Holocaust and the establishment of the State, learn about the challenges and dilemmas faced by those who lived then, learn about the pioneering fighters Hannah Szenes and Ada Sereni, and make connections between then and now.
Tour stops:
- The Atlit Illegal Immigrant Camp: Here we will learn about the story of the illegal immigrants, most of whom were Holocaust survivors, and the challenges they faced on their way to Israel. We will meet the figure of Ada Sereni and learn about her work on behalf of the illegal immigration enterprise through a play performed by the students. Finally, we will connect the challenges they faced to the challenges facing Israeli society today.
- Hannah Szenes House in Kibbutz Sdot Yam: Through a video, exhibition, and study of her poems, we will learn about Hannah Szenes, the values she believed in, and the path she chose to follow in light of those values. We will ask whether these values are still relevant to our lives and what we would like to learn from her character and choices for our own lives. In addition, we will talk about female combatants from the Iron Swords War and connect their actions to the legacy of Hannah Szenes and Ada Sereni.
